Improper spreader calibration wastes fertilizer, burns lawns, or leaves stripes. A properly calibrated spreader saves money and produces better results.
Quick answer
Measure spreader output by running over a test area, weighing material used, and adjusting settings until you hit the target rate (lbs per 1,000 sqft).
Key takeaways
- Calibrate at the start of each season
- Test on actual turf, not pavement
- Walking speed affects application rate
- Different products require different settings
- Record settings for each product you use
1. Why Calibration Matters
Manufacturer settings are starting points, not guarantees. Your walking speed, product density, and spreader condition all affect actual output.
2. Materials Needed
- Kitchen or postal scale (measures to 0.1 oz)
- Measuring tape or wheel
- Bags or tarps for collection
- The actual fertilizer you'll be applying
3. Rotary Spreader Calibration
- Mark out a 100-500 sqft test area
- Weigh a known amount of product in hopper
- Walk at normal pace, spreading over test area
- Weigh remaining product
- Calculate: (weight used ÷ area) × 1000 = lbs per 1,000 sqft
- Adjust setting and repeat until hitting target
4. Drop Spreader Calibration
Drop spreaders are more precise but calibration is still needed:
- Set up test strip on flat surface
- Collect output over measured distance
- Calculate rate and adjust hopper opening
5. Recording Settings
Keep a log of settings for each product:
- Product name and analysis (e.g., 24-0-6)
- Target rate (lbs/1,000 sqft)
- Spreader setting used
- Walking speed notes

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I calibrate my spreader?
At minimum, once per season and whenever you switch products. Worn parts also affect output over time.
Why are my spreader patterns uneven?
Usually caused by walking speed variation, worn impeller, or clogged holes. Clean spreader and check parts.
Can I use manufacturer's settings?
As a starting point only. Actual output varies based on your walking speed and product characteristics.
What's a good target fertilizer rate?
Typically 0.5-1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sqft per application. Use a fertilizer calculator for exact rates.
