Dull mower blades tear grass instead of cutting it, causing brown tips, disease, and unhappy customers. Sharp blades are fundamental to quality work.
Quick answer
Sharpen blades every 20-25 mowing hours. Remove, clean, grind to 30-degree edge, balance, and reinstall with proper torque.
Key takeaways
- Sharpen every 20-25 hours of mowing
- Maintain 30-degree cutting angle
- Always balance blades after sharpening
- Keep spare set for quick swaps
- Inspect for cracks and damage before reinstalling
1. Signs Your Blades Need Sharpening
- Grass tips appear torn or frayed
- Brown tips develop 1-2 days after mowing
- Uneven cut patterns
- Mower requires more power to cut
2. Removal Process
- Disconnect spark plug (safety first)
- Mark blade orientation before removing
- Use proper socket and breaker bar
- Wear heavy gloves when handling blades
3. Sharpening Technique
- Clean blade thoroughly first
- Clamp securely in vise
- Maintain original 30-degree angle
- Grind following original bevel
- Remove equal material from both ends
- Don't create razor edge — it dulls quickly
4. Balancing
Unbalanced blades cause vibration and spindle damage.
- Use blade balancer or nail method
- Grind heavy side until level
- Recheck after each adjustment
5. Reinstallation
- Clean spindle and mounting surfaces
- Install with cutting edge facing correct direction
- Torque to manufacturer specification
- Check clearance before starting

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I sharpen mower blades?
Every 20-25 hours of mowing. For commercial use, that's typically once or twice per week.
Can I sharpen blades without removing them?
Not recommended. You can't properly balance without removal, and risk injury working under the deck.
What angle should mower blades be sharpened to?
Maintain original 30-degree angle. Steeper angles dull faster; shallower don't cut as cleanly.
How do I know if a blade should be replaced?
Replace if bent, cracked, heavily worn, or if cutting edge is too thin to sharpen safely.
