Snow removal businesses can be highly profitable but require planning, equipment investment, and efficient route management. Here's how to start right.
Quick answer
Start with a reliable truck and plow ($30-50k+), get proper insurance (GL + commercial auto), build a tight geographic route, and focus on recurring contracts.
Key takeaways
- Reliable equipment is critical — breakdowns during storms are costly
- Focus on tight geographic routes for efficiency
- Recurring contracts provide stable winter income
- Salt/de-icing adds significant profit margins
- 24-hour response capability is expected
1. Equipment Investment
- Truck: 3/4 ton minimum (F-250, RAM 2500 class)
- Plow: $4,000-8,000 for quality straight blade
- Spreader: $1,500-5,000 tailgate or V-box
- Shovels/blowers: For sidewalks and detail work
2. Insurance Requirements
- General liability: $1-2M (slip/fall claims are common)
- Commercial auto: Required for plowing operations
- Workers comp: Required when you hire
- Many property managers require certificate of insurance
3. Route Building
Efficiency is everything in snow removal.
- Keep accounts within 10-15 minute drive of each other
- Group accounts by priority level
- Map optimal route before first storm
- Know backup routes for traffic/road closures
4. Contract Essentials
Written contracts protect you legally:
- Trigger depth clearly stated
- Scope of work (driveway only, or walks/steps too?)
- Salting terms and pricing
- Payment terms and late fees
- Liability limitations
5. Growing Beyond Solo
- Start with subcontractors for overflow
- Add second truck when route is full
- Consider sidewalk crews separate from plow trucks
- Invest in job management software for scheduling

3/4 ton trucks (F-250, RAM 2500, Silverado 2500) are standard. Diesel preferred for durability.
Do I need a commercial license to plow snow?
