Lawn Area Calculator

Find your lawn's area in square feet and acres from a satellite map. Enter the address and trace the grass to get the area. For a simple rectangle, area is length x width: a 50 ft by 100 ft yard is 5,000 sq ft.

How to calculate lawn area

Lawn area is the grass you actually cut, in square feet. For a rectangle it is length x width: a 50 ft by 100 ft yard is 5,000 sq ft, or 0.11 acres. Real yards are rarely rectangles, which is what the satellite map is for. Trace the edge of the grass and the tool adds up the shape for you.

To work out an odd shape by hand, split it into rectangles and triangles and add up their areas. Then subtract anything inside the lawn that is not grass, like a shed or a pool.

How to use the lawn area calculator

  1. Type the property address and pick it from the list.
  2. Zoom in until you can see exactly where the grass ends.
  3. Start drawing and click each corner of the lawn. Close the shape on the first point.
  4. Read the square feet and acres in the results panel.
  5. For a front and back yard, measure each one and add them.

Area formulas for common lawn shapes

ShapeFormulaExample
Rectanglelength x width50 ft x 100 ft = 5,000 sq ft
Trianglebase x height / 220 ft x 30 ft / 2 = 300 sq ft
Circle3.14 x radius x radius5 ft radius = about 79 sq ft
Irregulartrace it, or split into the shapes aboveuse the satellite map

Worked example: an L-shaped back yard

Say the yard is a 60 ft by 40 ft rectangle with a 20 ft by 15 ft patio in one corner. The rectangle is 2,400 sq ft. The patio is 300 sq ft. The lawn is 2,400 - 300 = 2,100 sq ft, or 0.05 acres. On the satellite map you would trace the L directly and get the same answer without the subtraction.

Square feet to acres

Lawn areaAcres
2,500 sq ft0.06
5,000 sq ft0.11
7,500 sq ft0.17
10,890 sq ft0.25
21,780 sq ft0.50
43,560 sq ft1.00

One acre is 43,560 sq ft. Divide square feet by that number to get acres.

Mowing time and price by lawn area

Once you know the area, the rest follows. CrewNest's lawn mowing calculator assumes about 15 minutes of mowing per 1,000 sq ft and $0.015 per sq ft for a flat, open lawn cut once. Here is what that gives:

Lawn areaAcresMowing timePrice per visit
2,000 sq ft0.0530 min$30
5,000 sq ft0.1175 min$75
7,500 sq ft0.17113 min$113
10,000 sq ft0.23150 min$150

The mowing engine is linear, so it overstates very large lawns. For an acre or more, use the per-acre table on the lawn mowing calculator.

Checking a measurement

A quick sanity check catches most tracing errors. Pace out the longest side of the lawn: an adult stride is roughly 2.5 feet, so 40 paces is about 100 feet. Multiply the long side by the short side and compare it with the traced number. If the two are far apart, zoom in and trace again.

Measure each separate patch of grass on its own and add them. One big shape drawn around the house counts the roof as lawn.

What to do with your lawn area

Most lawn jobs are priced or ordered by square foot, so the area is the input to everything else. On CrewNest's own calculators:

  • Mowing: a 5,000 sq ft lawn is about $75 a visit.
  • Sod: 1,000 sq ft of tall fescue is $450 in material, $950 - $1,450 installed.
  • Mulch: a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches takes 1.9 cubic yards, about $65 of hardwood mulch.
  • Fertilizer: rates are given per 1,000 sq ft, so divide your area by 1,000.
  • Landscaping cost: price a whole-yard project in one estimate.

Common mistakes

  • Using the lot size. The lot on your deed includes the house and the driveway. Lawn area is only the grass.
  • Tracing the tree canopy. Trees hide the lawn edge from above. Follow the grass line where you can see it and estimate under the trees.
  • Mixing units. Keep everything in feet. A measurement in yards gives an area nine times too small.
  • Forgetting the strips. The grass between the sidewalk and the street is often mowed and often missed.

Measure it yourself or get it measured?

For mowing or fertilizer, a satellite trace or a tape measure is all you need. For sod on a large lawn, or anything where the grade matters, have the installer measure on site: they will check slopes and drainage that a map cannot show.

For lawn care crews

Measuring from satellite lets you quote a new lead the same day without driving out. Trace the lawn, price it per square foot, and send the quote while the customer is still comparing. Walk the property on the first visit and adjust if the imagery missed something.

CrewNest saves each measurement to the customer and turns it into an estimate. See CrewNest for lawn care.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the area of my lawn?▾

For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet: a 50 ft by 100 ft lawn is 5,000 sq ft. For any other shape, trace the outline on the satellite map above and the tool returns the area in square feet and acres. You can also split an odd shape into rectangles and triangles and add them up.

How many square feet is my yard?▾

Enter your address above and trace the lawn. Trace only the grass if you are pricing mowing or fertilizer: the house and the patio are not lawn.

How many square feet are in an acre?▾

An acre is 43,560 sq ft. A quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and a half acre is 21,780 sq ft. To convert, divide square feet by 43,560.

What is the area of a triangle or circle in a lawn?▾

A triangle is base x height / 2, so a 20 ft by 30 ft triangle is 300 sq ft. A circle is 3.14 x radius x radius, so a round bed 10 ft across (5 ft radius) is about 79 sq ft. Subtract beds and trees from the lawn total, not add them.

Is a satellite measurement accurate enough to quote from?▾

It is close enough to quote most mowing and fertilizer jobs before a site visit. Trees and old imagery can hide the real edge of a lawn, so trace carefully and walk the property before you commit to a large job.

How much does it cost to mow a 5,000 sq ft lawn?▾

About $75 a visit on CrewNest's lawn mowing calculator, which uses $0.015 per sq ft before adjustments for frequency and slope.

How much sod do I need for my lawn?▾

The lawn area plus about 10% for cuts and edges. A 1,000 sq ft lawn needs about 1,100 sq ft of sod, which is 110 rolls at 10 sq ft each. The sod calculator does the roll and pallet count.

Is the lawn area calculator free?▾

Yes. Your first measurement here is free with no signup. A free CrewNest account saves up to 10 measurements a month and turns them into quotes.
