Timing is everything with lawn fertilization. Apply at the wrong time and you waste money — or damage the turf. Here's when to fertilize for your region and grass type.
Quick answer
Cool-season grasses: fertilize heavily in fall, lightly in spring. Warm-season grasses: fertilize in late spring through summer. Never fertilize dormant grass.
Key takeaways
- Cool-season: Fall is most important (Sept-Nov)
- Warm-season: Late spring through summer (May-Aug)
- Never fertilize dormant or stressed grass
- 4-6 week intervals between applications
- Soil test determines what nutrients you actually need
1. Cool-Season Grass (Fescue, Bluegrass, Rye)
Cool-season fertilizer schedule
- Early Fall (Sept): Heaviest application — roots are actively growing
- Late Fall (Nov): Winterizer application for root storage
- Spring (Apr-May): Light application only — avoid pushing top growth
- Summer: Skip or very light — grass is stressed
2. Warm-Season Grass (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine)
Warm-season fertilizer schedule
- Late Spring (May): First application after green-up
- Summer (Jun-Aug): Regular applications every 6-8 weeks
- Early Fall (Sept): Final application before dormancy
- Winter: No fertilizer — grass is dormant
3. When NOT to Fertilize
- During drought stress
- When grass is dormant
- Right before heavy rain (runoff)
- On frozen ground
- When soil is waterlogged
4. Application Best Practices
- Apply when grass is dry, water in afterward
- Use calibrated spreader for even coverage
- Apply 0.5-1.0 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sqft per application
- Wait 4-6 weeks between applications

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I fertilize my lawn?
4-6 applications per year is typical. Cool-season focuses on fall; warm-season on summer.
What happens if I fertilize in summer?
Cool-season grass in summer is stressed. Fertilizing pushes leaf growth that can't be supported, causing damage.
Should I fertilize before or after mowing?
Either works. Many prefer after mowing so granules reach soil better. Water in within 24 hours.
What's the best fertilizer for lawns?
Depends on soil needs. General purpose: balanced NPK (like 20-10-10). Get a soil test for specific recommendations.
