Those black streaks on your roof aren't dirt or mold — they're algae colonies eating your shingles. Here's what you need to know.
Quick answer
Black roof streaks are Gloeocapsa magma algae. It feeds on limestone in shingles, spreads through spores, and shortens roof life if untreated. Soft washing removes it safely.
Key takeaways
- Black streaks are algae, not dirt or mold
- Algae feeds on limestone filler in shingles
- Spreads via airborne spores (neighborhood effect)
- Shortens shingle life if left untreated
- Soft washing (not pressure washing) removes it
1. What Causes Black Roof Streaks
The culprit is Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that:
- Feeds on limestone filler in asphalt shingles
- Produces a dark pigmented sheath for UV protection
- Spreads via airborne spores (one house infects neighbors)
- Thrives in humid, shaded conditions
2. Is It Harmful?
Yes, but slowly:
- Dark color absorbs heat, increasing cooling costs
- Algae holds moisture against shingles
- Accelerates granule loss and deterioration
- Can void manufacturer warranty if neglected
3. How to Remove It
Important: Never pressure wash a roof
High pressure damages shingles and voids warranty. Professional soft washing uses low-pressure chemical application that kills algae without damage.
4. Prevention
- Trim trees for more sunlight/airflow
- Install zinc or copper strips at ridge line
- Consider algae-resistant shingles when replacing
- Clean every 2-4 years in prone areas

Frequently Asked Questions
Are black roof streaks dangerous?
Not immediately harmful to health, but they accelerate roof aging and increase energy costs by absorbing heat.
Can I remove roof stains myself?
Not recommended. DIY methods often damage shingles, and working on roofs is dangerous. Professional cleaning is worth the cost.
How much does roof cleaning cost?
Typically $300-700 for average residential, depending on roof size and pitch. Much cheaper than early roof replacement.
Will the streaks come back?
Eventually, yes — algae spores are everywhere. Cleaning every 2-4 years keeps them under control.
