A properly cleaned driveway can transform a property's curb appeal. But poor technique leaves streaks, damages concrete, and wastes time.
Quick answer
Use a surface cleaner for even results, apply degreaser for oil stains, work in overlapping passes, maintain consistent distance, and seal afterward for long-lasting results.
Key takeaways
- Surface cleaners are 10x faster than wand cleaning
- Pre-treat oil stains with degreaser before washing
- Work from high point to low point for proper drainage
- Keep consistent distance to avoid striping
- Consider sealing to protect and extend results
1. Equipment Selection
The right equipment makes driveway cleaning faster and more professional.
- PSI: 3000-4000 PSI for concrete (2000-2500 for pavers)
- Surface cleaner: 18-24" for residential, 24-36" for commercial
- Tips: 25° or 40° green/white tips for finishing
2. Pre-Treatment
Apply chemicals before pressure washing for better results.
- Apply degreaser to oil stains and let dwell 5-10 minutes
- For mold/mildew, pre-treat with diluted SH (1-2%)
- Wet down surrounding plants and cover if needed
3. Surface Cleaning Technique
Using a surface cleaner properly:
- Overlap each pass by 50% to prevent striping
- Move at consistent speed — rushing causes uneven cleaning
- Start at the highest point and work toward drainage
- Keep surface cleaner flat (tilting causes uneven wear)
4. Detail Work
Edges and tight spots need hand wanding:
- Use 25° tip for edges along grass/beds
- Maintain 12-18" distance to prevent etching
- Work with the grain of the concrete for best results
5. Post-Treatment & Sealing
Sealing protects concrete and makes future cleaning easier.
- Let concrete dry 24-48 hours before sealing
- Apply penetrating sealer for best durability
- Offer sealing as an upsell (typically +$0.20-0.50/sqft)

Do I need chemicals to pressure wash a driveway?
For basic dirt, hot water and pressure work. For oil stains, use degreaser. For mold/mildew, use diluted SH.
How do I avoid leaving stripes on concrete?
Use a surface cleaner (not a wand), overlap passes by 50%, maintain consistent speed, and keep even distance.
Should I seal a driveway after pressure washing?
Yes, sealing protects concrete from stains and weathering. It's an excellent upsell that adds $0.20-0.50/sqft profit.
